Disney’s CEO Bob Iger announced today at the D23 Expo plans for Star Wars-themed lands at both Disneyland park in Anaheim, California, and Disney's Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. The announcement of a themed expansion has been widely expected for a while now, since Disney acquired the rights to Lucasfilm and Star Wars back in 2012, but it's exciting nonetheless.
This is one of Disney's most ambitious projects, as each themed land is planned to host 14-acres of Star Wars goodness. Visitors will be transported to a "never-before-scene planet, a remote trading port and one of the last stops before wild space where Star Wars characters and their stories come to life."
"I cannot think of a better way to celebrate the next 60 years of Parks & Resorts than with Star Wars Land,” Disney President Bob Iger said during the announcement.
“Every restaurant, building, everything will be inhabited by the aliens and droids you’d expect to find there. You’d expect to find a Cantina – and there will be one. You’ll have the chance to run into all the droids and fantastic beasts that Star Wars is known for,” Iger continued. “You’ll meet characters from The Force Awakens and more from the Star Wars saga.”
Star Wars Lands will have two signature attractions, including the ability to take the controls of one of the most recognizable ships in the galaxy, the Millennium Falcon, on a customized secret mission, and an epic Star Wars adventure that puts guests in the middle of a climactic battle.
“We are creating a jaw-dropping new world that represents our largest single themed land expansion ever," Iger concluded.
