Disney Infinity 3.0 officially announced with Star Wars, Inside Out, and more Marvel

We've speculated for a long time now that Star Wars would be a perfect fit for Disney Infinity. Last week, we got our first confirmation (of sorts) that the next installment of Avalanche Studios' wonderfully addictive sandbox adventure — featuring characters from all ends of the Disney, Pixar and Marvel universe all in one experience — will be adding Star Wars to the mix.

Today, though, we get official confirmation.

Disney Infinity 3.0 is the feature of GameInformer's June issue, and giving us a taste of what to expect, the outlet confirmed that Star Wars will be included in the game.

Getting into specifics, the website revealed that Disney Infinity 3.0 will include content that covers both the original and prequel trilogies.

Ninja Theory's Twilight of the Republic pack-in playset is for fans of the prequel trilogy. First leaked last week, this playset is set after Star Wars: Episode II: Attack of the Clones, and follows Anakin and Ahsoka as they journey together to attempt to uncover the person responsible for the droid army. According to GameInformer, the playset features "land and space battles with plenty of melee combat." Obi-Wan, Yoda, and Darth Maul figures will also be sold separately.

For fans of the classic trilogy, you'll enjoy Studio Gobo's Rise Against the Empire. This is a "highlight reel of sorts" that basically presents the highlights of the original three films (Episode IV: A New Hope through Episode VI: Return of the Jedi). You'll play through memorable sequences featuring Luke, Leia, and Darth Vader, and travel to iconic planets like Hoth and Tatooine. Chewbacca, Han Solo, and Darth Vader figures will be sold separately.

The best part, characters from both periods can cross over between the two Star Wars playsets.

Disney Infinity 3.0 won't just be about adding Star Wars, though. Avalanche is said to have "reexamined fundamental parts of the game." Ninja Theory has retuned melee combat, "adjusting the timing and adding depth for advanced players." Meanwhile, Sumo Digital has tweaked aspects of Infinity's driving gameplay, adjusting the handling and drifting "to provide a smoother experience." The latter change is pretty important because one of the new Toy Box games is a kart racer.

Other playsets planned for Disney Infinity 3.0 include one based on the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens film (coming this winter), as well as a set based on Pixar's Inside Out — featuring figures for Joy, Disgust, Anger, Fear and Sadness. United Front Games (Sleeping Dogs) is also working on a playset focused on Marvel characters which will include Hulkbuster Iron Man, Ultron, and more.

GameInformer also confirmed another previous rumor, revealing other figures that'll be available separately from playsets. This includes Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Sam Flynn and Quorra from Tron: Legacy, Mulan, Olaf, "and more."

As for the Toy Box, it's getting an updated hub world, toys for "new players and experts," and an all-new farming system.

Disney Infinity 3.0 is set to release this fall on PS4, Xbox One, PC, Wii U, PS3, Xbox 360, iOS, and Android. The Starter Pack is priced at $64.99. A new batch of Power Discs are also coming, but Disney and Avalanche will be removing the randomness by getting rid of blind bags. Now you'll actually know what you're getting before you buy them.
