Disney Infinity is as expensive as you make it, pricing details revealed

Disney has revealed the pricing for Disney Infinity, its ambitious new gaming initiative that was officially unveiled early this week, and as we expected it will be up to you to determine how much you spend on it.

The starter pack for Disney Infinity is priced at $75 which may seem rather expensive, but when you take into account what it includes, it's actually a pretty decent deal. The starter pack includes the core game, three figurines and their corresponding Play Sets: Jack Sparrow (Pirates of the Caribbean), Sulley (Monsters Inc/Monsters University), and Mr. Incredible (The Incredibles), and the Infinity Base which is uses NFC technology to scan the figurines and translate them into the game.

Really, it's not a bad deal, but it looks like Disney will attempt to make most of its profit from the game's expansion pieces which include additional Play Set packs, individual figurines, and Power Disc Packs.

Play Set Packs, or individual game worlds tied to a specific Disney franchise, will be sold at $34.99. These include a world disc with access to a single Disney-themed Play Set and at least one character figure to use in that world. It's important to note that you can not use characters from other Disney franchises in the Play Set. Each character is unique to their individual Play Set universe, meaning you won't be able to bring Captain Jack Sparrow into the Monsters University Play Set.

It's only in the game's Toy Box mode that you can you mix and match different Disney elements. For that reason, Disney will also offer individual character figurines that will be available for $12.99 each, or $29.99 for a pack of three.  There will be 20 individual figurines available on day one. While most of these will be revealed leading up to the game's launch, the gameplay trailer has already suggested we'll see characters from the Cars, Wreck-It Ralph, Toy Story, and Nightmare Before Christmas franchises.

Additionally, Disney will offer Power Disc packs for $4.99 each. Power Discs are placed under a figure on the Infinity Base and can offer three types of enhancements: buffs, items, and custom environments. Buffs will augment the character, giving them strong attacks or things of that nature. Items equip the character with new weapons, equipment, or vehicles. Lastly, Environment customization discs change the theme for the sky and landscape in Toy Box mode. The Power Disc packs will contain a random assortment of Power Discs, so you'll never know which one you get.

As you can see, Disney Infinity can definitely add up. While the basic starter pack is reasonably priced, it's the add-ons that will really take a toll on your wallet — if you want it to. Obviously it will be up to each individual to determine which Play Sets and characters you buy. Of course, if you're like me, it'll be at least one of everything which will probably be quite expensive.
