Disney is shutting down Disney Infinity for good

With the toys-to-life genre getting overly crowded with the addition of Lego Dimensions last year, it was only a matter of time before someone dropped out of the race. It may come as a surprise to many that the Disney empire was the first to flinch. Whilst they did announce that there would be no new edition of the franchise this year, it is stunning to think that the toys-to-life market didn’t prove lucrative for the company, since Marvel Comics and Star Wars are two of the biggest franchises on the planet at the moment.

There will be two final updates for the 3.0 version of the game, with Alice and The Looking Glass sets releasing in May and Finding Dory sets releasing in June. IGN did a little digging and found that in addition to not only shutting down the game, Disney was also shutting down its studio, Avalanche Software. As a result, 300 people are being laid off. I hope that the talented developers behind the series find just as fulfilling work.

This isn’t the end of Disney games, as the company will continue to license its franchises. What form that takes, however, remains to be seen.
