Doctor Who's Steve Moffat has hinted at a return to the series for Matt Smith.
Should this come to fruition the actor would be carving his name into the Doctor Who history books as the first Doctor to regenerate back into himself.
Speaking to The Mirror, the show's producer admitted that it was a rather "difficult time" when Matt Smith announced that he would be leaving the show.
He said: “Matt, who was a friend and ally, was leaving. I couldn’t get him to stay. It felt like everything was blowing up around me."
Matt Smith faced a tough task in succeeding his very popular predecessor, David Tennant, back in 2010, but his return to the series might well be met with open arms from the show's fan base.
Smith is "quite open about how much he misses it, and how much he wishes he hadn't left," according to Moffat, which could increase the chances of both parties working together in the near future.
Speaking of tough tasks, nothing has been more difficult than Peter Capaldi's introduction to the series.
Coming in as one of the older Doctors in recent times, the actor has coolly brushed off a number of reported ageism rows and scrutiny to achieve some popularity during his travels through time and space.
Capaldi has been working on the upcoming season of Doctor Who, which is set to hit our screens in 2017.
But, could the proposition of having Matt Smith back at the helm pave the way for Capaldi's departure? We shall have to watch… and wait.
