Domain update for ‘Persona 5 R’ could mean looming game announcement

Are you ready Joker?

A newly updated domain registration by Japanese gaming company Atlus is pointing at an imminent game announcement regarding an updated version of Persona 5 titled Persona 5 R. The studio’s most recent main entry into the cult and stylish JRPG became a smash success not only in Japan but also among worldwide audiences.

Perssonacentral, a dedicated fanpage about all things Persona, reports that Japanese gaming giant Atlus has just updated a domain registration for ‘Persona 5 R’. The domain was part of a larger batch of Persona-related domain registrations way back in early 2017 and is a fairly common practice in the gaming industry. Companies register domains with the names or likely names of their upcoming games to prevent legal issues with third-party entities who jump the gun and register domains likely to be desired by companies.

As such, Persona 5 R was first registered under P5R.JP. It was unmistakably meant for Persona 5 as other registrations in the same batch were all about the JRPG franchise as well.

Now however, the domain for Persona 5 R was updated. Specifically on December 25th. After this news broke out, naturally fans began to speculate what game P5R could be and when Atlus would make an official announcement.

Personacentral refers to an anonymous leak on a popular Japanese forum. In that leak from December 10, the anonymous tipster revealed several info on Persona-related games. Among those was the supposed Super Smash Bros. Ultimate stage name that is coming together with the Persona 5 character Joker.

Most interestingly however and giving the leak much more credibility, was the tidbit about Arc System Works doing a Granblue fighting game. Only a couple days later, that game was officially announced. So, there’s some truth to that leak after all.

As such, the portion of that leak stating that Persona 5 R is a complete version of Persona 5 and will release in 2019 suddenly becomes a whole lot more believable. There’s no info on which platforms the complete version of the original PS3 and PS4 exclusive is supposed to come out.

Atlus traditionally unveiled games within two weeks of a domain update, as such Personacentral suspects we could get an official announcement for Persona 5 R very soon. Stay tuned for new info in the coming weeks.
