Earlier this year, production began on next year's Star Wars film which is set to be a story about the rise of a young Han Solo. One character who will tag along with the smuggler is none other than the scoundrel's long-time friend, Lando Calrissian who will be played by comedian, actor, and musician, Donald Glover.
The film has had a bit of a troubled production to say the least and has seen a directing duo exit and get replaced by Ron Howard. Directing duo Phil Lord and Chris Miller were reportedly fired from the project in the final weeks of filming due to Lucasfilm and Disney executives being incredibly displeased with the tone that the crew had been using over the course of filming. It was too humorous and didn't align with Disney's vision so they were told to pack their bags which lead to the internet freaking out since directors NEVER leave projects this late into production.
Howard was brought in pretty quickly but reports suggest that they're reshooting incredibly large portions of the movie and there were many changes made on set. Since everyone has been so busy, no one has really had time to speak on the subject until now. Glover sat down with The Hollywood Reporter in an extensive interview regarding himself and the subject of the Han Solo film came up. It sounds like things are going pretty well but Glover still doesn't know what happened with Lord and Miller and he feels a bit weird knowing the people who cast him aren't around anymore.
"Ron is such a legend, and he knows exactly what the vision for what he is doing is … [but Phil and Chris] hired us, so you sort of feel like, 'I know I'm not your first choice …' And you worry about that," he says, picking at a croissant. "To be honest, I don't know exactly what happened. I feel like I was the baby in the divorce, or the youngest child. The oldest child is like, 'We know what's happening, but we are keeping you out of it.' And I'm just like, [Glover's voice rises several octaves] 'Was that scene good? How did you feel?' "
The movie is scheduled to release in May of 2018 but we have yet to see any footage or even pictures outside of some very vague shots taken on set by Ron Howard. Hopefully, we'll see something during the trailers section of Thor: Ragnarok or Star Wars: The Last Jedi this fall.
The untitled Han Solo film is set to hit theaters on May 25th, 2018 but could potentially see a delay.
