Remember the sleeper hit Xbox 360/PS3 crime-action game that was Sleeping Dogs? It mixed elements of Grand Theft Auto with an epic Asian crime film with brutal combat and awesome mechanics such as being able to jump from car to car, do a little parkour, and more.
The game eventually made its way to PS4 and Xbox One where it got a bit more love but it was ultimately considered failure by publisher Square Enix. A spin-off for PC was later released but it too was a flop and ended in the closure of developer United Front Games, canceling a sequel in the process.
Regardless, a film has been in the works for quite some time and in March of 2017, Hong Kong icon Donnie Yen became attached to star in the lead role. Many were skeptical of if the film would actually get made since it wasn’t a mega-popular IP and big video games already have enough trouble getting films made but it appears Sleeping Dogs has already begun filming!
Star Donnie Yen took to Instagram to post a side-by-side comparison of him on set and his video game counterpart, Wei Shen. He captioned the post saying “Sometimes great things take a bit of time. Sleeping Dog is motion, you guys ready for this?” Yes, yes we are.
There are no details regarding the plot of the film or when it will come out but we can probably expect it sometime in 2019 given the fact it is filming right now.
