DOOM, the game formerly known as DOOM 4, has been revealed. That's what people on Twitter are saying, anyway. Bethesda isn't allowing any pictures or videos to leak out, nor have they shared any. Since I'm not at QuakeCon, all I have regarding the reveal is the following:
It's an origin game, about fast, FAST paced combat. #doom4 #quakecon2014

Forget key cards. Player just ripped arm off guard to scan his fingers on a hand scanner.

The hand-to-hand kill moves are varied and fantastically gory. And here comes the chainsaw.

A reboot may just be what the doctor ordered for the DOOM franchise. DOOM 3 released in 2004. That's ten years ago, so don't be too surprised if people have stopped caring about the game. The FPS genre has shunned its grandfathers in favor of Halo or Call of Duty.
You know what, though? The kids are done playing. Wolfenstein returned with The New Order and much fanfare. While DOOM may more weight on its shoulders, that's not to say it's impossible. The game has "only" been in development since 2008, including a reboot in 2011, so we're not talking about Duke Nukem Forever type levels of developmental hell just yet. More importantly, though, is the fact that the game is being published by Bethesda. Buggy games aside, they've proven time and time again a commitment to patience and quality. Dishonored was a smashing success, Wolfenstein was a surprise hit, Elder Scrolls Online was…
…well, it had its moments to be fair.
The point is that there's a lot riding on DOOM. The private QuakeCon reveal only raised expectations, something both id Software and Bethesda were no doubt planning. They made me excited about the game and hopeful that I'll enjoy the final product. I mean, hey, I loved RAGE, so I should have nothing to worry about, right?
I should just ignore the fact that the game's been in development for six years, people have been leaving id Software, and all I've seen on the game is a code for the beta and a teaser trailer.
