Dota 2 International prize pool hits $6 million

Valve’s Dota 2 tournament The International has ridden a wave of crowdfunding to a prize pool of $6 million, making it the biggest tournament in gaming history. Put in perspective: The previous International topped out at $2.8 million.

The staggering sum was built by roughly 2.4 million Compendium purchases over at the game’s official blog. A Compendium is “a virtual booklet that contain dozens of ways to interact with the year’s biggest Dota 2 tournament,” and each one purchased adds $2.50 to the prize pool.

The tournament has long since surpassed its initial requisite as well as several stretch goals, but still has room to grow. With a grand cap of $10 million, up to nine new features may be added, with a “victory prediction taunt” rounding it off.
