PlayStation 4 exclusive Drawn To Death will be free-to-play, the game's director David Jaffe (of Twisted Metal and God of War fame) confirmed in response to a fan on Twitter.
First revealed last December at PlayStation Experience, Drawn To Death is a hand-drawn, arena-based shooter featuring wild characters duking it out in crazy environments. The idea is that these bizzare landscapes and weird/amazing characters are the designs of a very creative teenager doodling in his notebook.
While the game was plenty on display at the PlayStation event, it was only recently that Jaffe talked about the game's business model. Taking to Drawn To Death's subreddit, he further explained:
"…it's done by a team that dislikes traditional free to play games very, very much. We don't like pay to win and we don't like taking play mechanics away from Players simply to have them earn them or pay for them. That said, we LOVE the discoverability (as PowerofX says) of free to play and the very wide net it creates, allowing us to get many more folks giving our game a shot. We also love the idea of running a service based title, constantly staying engaged with the fans of the game and adjusting aspects of the game on the fly to allow the game to hit the game's sweet spot."
Drawn To Death is designed to play like "the offspring of an old school arena shooter and a hardcore brawler/fighting game." Jaffe added on Twitter that the game is in "full blown production," though we don't yet have a release date. As for their design approach, I eagerly await seeing the developer's approach towards free-to-play.
