Dungeon-Crawler Spin-Off Minecraft: Dungeons by Mojang is coming 2019

Mojang has announced a brand-new spin-off game in the legendary Minecraft franchise with Minecraft: Dungeons. As the title implies, Dungeons is a dungeon crawler set in the mysterious and dangerous underground caverns of Minecraft. No actual gameplay is released as of now, but we know that the game is planned to come out next year. You can check out the announcement trailer here.

Minecraft: Dungeons is announced to release only for PC, for now. We wouldn’t be surprised to see subsequent ports to consoles, handhelds and even mobile platforms sometime later after launch. It’s heavy bias but the likelihood of Minecraft: Dungeons being a showcase in technical advancement and thus only coming out for PC are pretty slim. The series is literally famous for its low-fi blocky visuals.

For now however, we can only report on what developer Mojang has shared with the game’s unveiling. Minecraft: Dungeons does wear its heart on its sleeves and the creators have no intention of making it clear, Dungeons is a love letter to old school dungeon crawling. Different classes, weapons, gear, magic spells and loot are all hallmarks of the rather niche genre, and will play a big role in the game.

This doesn’t mean that Minecraft: Dungeons won’t include anything new. Quite the opposite. Mojang is promising entirely new mobs, weapons and environments, and if venturing deep into hostile dungeons alone does sound too drab, you’ll be delighted to learn that you can team up with friends and go on an adventure with a party of up to 4 players.

Mojang is pretty excited about Minecraft: Dungeons and tries to make it clear that this is a passion project for the studio. It’s likely that reason why Dungeons isn’t created in cooperation with another developer, experienced in the genre. Similar to how Mojang worked together with Telltale Games on Minecraft: Story Mode. Instead, a small team in Sweden, home of the original Minecraft, has taken the reigns on Minecraft: Dungeons.

Minecraft: Dungeons is planned to release for PC in 2019.
