In late 2014, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson was in talks with Disney to voice one of the characters in the upcoming animated film Moana. Today, he has officially signed on, taking to Instagram for a post showing him at Disney Studios signing the contracts.
The Instagram post reads:
At DISNEY STUDIOS signin contracts to play the male lead in their next big classic animated musical, #MOANA. Just had an amazing 2hr presentation and it's easy to see why they're the greatest story tellers in the world. I'm excited. And in the background my homies Fred & Wasabi from #BigHERO6 are jumpin' for joy joy cause they heard I'm gonna sing in the movie. #WeTrulyKnowWhereWereGoing #WhenWeUnderstandWhereWereFrom #NeverForgetHome #MOANA
This is very exciting news indeed. Not only is Dwayne Johnson a fun actor to watch on the screen, but Disney has been on a roll with its musicals, the last two being Frozen and Tangled.
Moana is computer animated, not drawn, and by Disney Animation Studios — the same people that have done Frozen, Big Hero 6, Tangled and Wreck-It Ralph. Moana is about the journey of a spirited teenager named Moana that sails the Pacific Ocean to complete her ancestor's quest. It's being directed by John Musker and Ron Clements, the directors of Aladdin, the Little Mermaid and The Princess and the Frog, with music by Mark Mancina, who composed tracks for The Lion King, Brother Bear and Tarzan. Moana is joined by a pot belly pig and a Tiki god named Moke Moke that's shaped like a carved statue.
I'm looking forward to hearing The Rock sing, seeing as how he already did so on SNL.
