Dynasty Warriors 9 is Here, It’s Open-World

Break the shackles, it's time to explore the three kingdoms

Dynasty Warriors 9 has been revealed by Koei Tecmo. The series has always been a hack-and-slash, almost guilty pleasure sort of game where players just grind through waves of enemies during the end of China's Han Dynasty, historically known as the Three Kingdoms period.

The series has obviously had a number of titles, many of which simply added more characters, more moves, and slight gameplay additions, but nothing that changed the overall gameplay. Koei Tecmo has announced some big changes with Dynasty Warriors 9  however. The new installment will be open world, which is teased at in the trailer below.

Fun Fact: The Dynasty Warriors series is numbered one off in Japan because the original game was a fighting game and not hack-and-slash and thus was a different series. America apparently disagreed. That's why this trailer says '8'.

Producer Akihiro Suzuki describes to Siliconera how Dynasty Warriors 9 is a "rebirth" of the series where they essentially try to make the whole Chinese map into one huge game map. The game will feature all 83 characters from Dynasty Warriors 8, as well as some new ones.

The Dynasty Warriors team has previously worked on Hyrule Warriorsa spin-off of the Legend of Zelda series and love-child between the Musou series and Zelda. There's no release date for Dynasty Warriors 9, but when there's more information on the matter, you'll find it on GameZone.
