E3 2014 Watch: Microsoft registers ‘XboxAB’ domain names

Perhaps putting the final touches on their plans for E3, Microsoft this week registered two new domain names seemingly related to Xbox.

Spotted by the eagle-eyed folk at NeoGAF, Microsoft registered two domain names: www.xboxab.com and www.xboxab.net, both of which currently lead us to a Bing search. Looking up the domain's WHOIS reveals the names were registered under MarkMonitor, an internet brand protection company that often handles Microsoft's domain registrations.

It's speculated that the "AB" could stand for augmented body, perhaps marking Microsoft's entrance into augmented reality. In January 2013, Microsoft showed off IllumiRoom, a type of technology that expands your gaming experience beyond the TV and into your room. But beyond that initial reveal, very little has been said of the technology. In September, Albert Panello, head of product planning for Xbox One, commented that it's likely the general consumer will never see this technology released. So maybe the "AB" is more indicative of MIcrosoft working on some sort of Virtual Reality headset for Xbox One and Xbox 360 — perhaps something to rival the Oculus Rift and Sony's Project Morpheus.

Hopefully we find out more at E3, if that is indeed what these domain registrations are leading up to. In addition to these registrations, Microsoft has also trademarked "Eden Falls," a possible game to be announced at E3.
