E3 2016: Nintendo unveils Pokemon GO with new gameplay, release window & price point

Nintendo has announced some new gameplay and vital details in regards to the upcoming Pokemon GO video game, including a release window and price.

Now, let's talk about the gameplay.

Brand new Pokemon GO gameplay was showcased in front of the E3 audience and thousands watching online, unveiling the different ways in which the lines between reality and what we've enjoyed doing in the Pokemon series over the years have been blurred.

Whether you've watched Pokemon on television, played one of the video games or maybe even collected the Pokemon trading cards, there is something about catching and battling with these creatures that has made it a global phenomenon. And, pretty soon you will be able to leave your house and do exactly that!

According to the panel today, Pokemon GO has been tested all over the world by hundreds of gamers, and in a month's time you too could get involved.

Nintendo is working towards a July release for the game, but there is no specific launch date as of yet. The game will be available on Android and iOS devices for $34.99, an arguably hefty fee for a mobile game.

Here are a few more notes from today's Pokemon GO presentation:

• Pokemon GO will include a variety of different Pokemon, including the rarest ones that Pokemon Red & Blue has to offer. Consultation with Niantic made this possible, creating the game in a way whereby Pokemon will behave in a manner that you would expect, and this should allow them to be found in areas that you would be likely to find them too. For example, Krabby will appear near water.

• Pokemon Red & Blue was chosen – in particular – as the basis of Pokemon GO for nostalgia purposes, especially with it being the 20th anniversary of Pokemon.

• Your technique in how you throw your Poke ball might well effect your chances of catching Pokemon in the game, with smaller Pokemon easier to catch.

• The focus of Pokemon GO Plus is to keep people exploring, even when they're not looking at their smartphone device. Therefore, you will be able to play without opening your smartphone up.
• The Pokemon GO Plus device will flash green if there is a Pokemon nearby, but that's not the only colour that it will flash. Pokemon GO Plus will flash a rainbow colour if the Pokemon is caught and will flash a red colour if you fail to catch the Pokemon.
