E3 2018: The Last of Us Part II gets brutal gameplay demo

The visuals are gorgeous.

After being revealed at the end of 2016, Naughty Dog has been tight-lipped on what The Last of Us Part II is all about. It’s several years after the first game, you play as Ellie but you also appear to switch between her and some new survivors in The Last of Us universe. Other than that, it’s a mystery!

Tonight at Sony’s E3 briefing, they blew the lid off of what The Last of Us Part II is all about and showed us a pretty meaty gameplay demo. We start with Ellie at some sort of party when suddenly, a young woman approaches her and they begin to dance and eventually have a nice, romantic kiss.

The romance is cut short with a transition that leads into Ellie slitting a man’s throat in a dark forest, she stealths her way through, avoiding the eyes of a rival faction who are brutally killing other survivors. Gameplay appears to keep that scrappy, brutal nature of the first game as we see Ellie get up close and personal with several enemies. She disarms one, takes their weapon, and uses it against them before being engaged in a firefight.

She’s clearly outnumbered so she runs away and crawls under a truck to escape from her pursuers. She gets caught, pulled out, and has to use the few bullets she has left to defend herself from the people surrounding her. Once she runs out, she bolts away again.

She throws a bottle at someone in her path and uses them as a meatshield for an incoming arrow and then continues to flee. Once Ellie has hidden again, she heals her wounds and tries to craft some items to help her escape the gang of savages chasing her. She manages to escape and show her strength and utter brutality as a single force
