E3 2019: Double Fine Productions next studio purchased by Xbox

For the past couple years, Microsoft has pursued a rather aggressive policy of acquiring new studios under their Xbox Game Studio banner. After high-profile acquisitions like Ninja Theory and Obsidian last year, Double Fine Productions is the next developer to go under the Xbxo umbrella.

Double Fine Productions is the famous game studio founded by industry veteran and legend Tim Shafer. After an extremely fruitful career at Lucas Arts where Shafer helped creating cult games like Manic Mansion, The Secret of Monkey Island and much more, Shafer founded Double Fine in pursue of continuing his creative work without being shackled to a large company.

Under the leadership of industry veteran Tim Schafer, Double Fine has been a beacon of creativity and spirit in game development for almost 20 years. At the root of every game is an emphasis on creating crazy worlds with originality, story and fun. That commitment to creating a unique, player-centric experience is what drew us to the studio, and I’m looking forward to seeing what we create together.

During this time, Double Fine created a plethora of great games like Psychonauts, Brütal Legend, Kickstarter darling Broken Age and much more. Now, Shafer and his team will bring their talent and decades worth of experience to Xbox, and no doubt work hard at bolstering Xbox Game Studios’ portfolio of narrative adventure titles.
