E3 2019: Xbox details next-gen console for 2020, Project Scarlett

After an embarrassing launch with the Xbox One which was ridiculed for 720p games for months, Xbox has been investing hardcore in hardware. With Xbox One X, they delivered native 4K gaming and the world’s most powerful console to date. It has changed the game for console gaming in many ways and Xbox looks to keep that going in the next-generation.

Today at E3, Xbox debuted the first details for Project Scarlett which will offer 8K resolution, up to 120 FPS, ray-tracing, and much more. Microsoft also promises to be using an SSD this time around which will speed up the console’s performance by up to 40x over the current console generation hardware. “We’ve created a new generation of SSDs. We’re using the SSD as virtual RAM,” says a spokesperson in a new video.

As for specific specs, Project Scarlett will be built using a custom designed CPU based on AMD’s Zen 2 and Radeon RDNA architecture which will allow it to be at least 4X more powerful than the Xbox One X. The next-gen console will also use GDDR6 RAM which will apparently “usher in resolution and framerates we’ve never seen before.”

Only one game was announced for Project Scarlett’s holiday 2020 launch and that’s Halo: Infinite, we’ll likely hear much more about it and see the console in action at next year’s E3.
