According to EA’s CFO Blake Jorgensen, digital games are the ‘way of the future,’ but purchasing physical versions of games won’t ever die. Jorgensen revealed his prediction yesterday during the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference.
This isn’t the first time we have heard of a digital future, the model has been brought up frequently in the gaming world – specifically when speculating about the Xbox One prior to its reveal. While Microsoft didn’t pursue a digital only console, Jorgensen believes that consumers have already made the move from physical to digital.
“We take a very simple view. We want the consumer to decide. We have great retail partners, we want to continue to maintain our great retail partners and they perform a lot of discovery and marketing services for us.
And so, we believe there’s a world where the retail partners are always going to be around, but also a lot of consumers, just like music and books, and movies, and TV have adopted, download digitally is ultimately the way of the future. We try to make sure that we’re available in any place the people want to bay our games.”
If digital games are the future, we will need consoles with bigger hard drives.
