Star Wars Battlefront has officially released today on the Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC, and EA is already talking about expanding the series to include Battlefront sequels, as well as other Star Wars based games.
"We struck a licensing deal with Disney a few years back that's almost ten years in length. The game that comes out tomorrow, Star Wars Battlefront, is a traditional first-person style shooter game," said EA CFO Blake Jorgensen to GameSpot. "Our goal is to make future Battlefront games as well as other style games around the Star Wars franchise, both on mobile as well as console and PC."
So, we can take this as a promise of future iterations in the Battlefront series, along with Star Wars games in different genres. This can certainly instill the hope of an open-world Star Wars game from the new studio led by former Assassin's Creed producer Jade Raymond and Amy Hennig, formerly of Naughty Dog.
While has little to no intention on basing their games fully of the Star Wars films, the deal that Jorgensen refers to includes the six Star Wars films that have released, but also the the future core films and spin-offs. EA will base future games off of the established lore from the franchise, but will tie-in to the films in a more subtle way.
An example of this would be the Battle of Jakku DLC for Star Wars Battlefront. The Battle of Jakku will take players 30 years before the upcoming The Force Awakens film and directly after the end of Return of the Jedi – sufficiently bridging the gap in time between the two without exploring too much of the story.
