EA responds: ‘Maxis continues to support Darkspore’

Electronic Arts has reached out to us to clarify some confusion stemming from a game-breaking bug in Darkspore that resulted in players unable to log-in to the game and its eventual removal from the Steam store.

Earlier today, Darkspore players hit a snag known as "Error Code 3," a server-side issue that prevented players from saving any changes made to their heroes. It was an issue that appeared would never get fixed as a post on the game's forums claimed EA and Maxis have abandoned the title. Turns out, that's not true.

"Maxis continues to support Darkspore and its servers," EA representative Charlie Sinhaseni told us. "We recently resolved a problem where players were having issues connecting to the game."

As for the post in the forums, Sinhaseni explained it "came from a moderator who is not an employee of EA." The post has since been updated to reflect "accurate information." It now reads:

7/1/13: Welcome to the Darkspore forums. Thanks for supporting the game. We recently resolved an issue that was causing some players to not be able to connect to the game. If you any encounter any other issues, please contact help.ea.com for customer support. We will continue to support Darkspore, so feel free to continue to discuss the game here. Thanks – Maxis.

As of now, Darkspore remains unavailable on Steam — a likely result of the persistent bugs since its release in 2011. You can still purchase the game through Origin, however. More importantly, this still just goes to show you how bad of an idea always-on DRM is.
