On June 14, Electronic Arts will be retiring some of their Facebook games. The Sims Social, SimCity Social, and Pet Society will each be shut down so that EA can "reallocate development resources to other titles."
"After millions of people initially logged in to play these games, the number of players and amount of activity has fallen off. For people who have seen other recent shutdowns of social games, perhaps this is not surprising," EA told customers today. The company said it had plans on offering its fanbase "something to show our appreciation," but didn't detail what it would be. In the meantime, you have until June 14 to spend any remaining cash balance you may have for each game.
The closing of these three games doesn't necessarily mean EA will be shutting down all of its Facebook games. As mentioned in today's post, Bejeweled Blitz, Solitaire Blitz and the recently announced Plants vs. Zombies Adventures are all still available. You can read more about each individual game's closing here.
"On behalf of the teams who developed these games, thank you for playing," EA concluded. Last week, Electronics Arts reported another round of layoffs for EA Mobile Montreal.
