EA Sports' golf games have included the name and face of Tiger Woods since 1998. It was last year around E3 when we spoke with Executive Producer Brent Nielsen, and when EA Sports said that they would be dropping Tiger Woods' name from PGA Tour. We assumed that it would go nameless and be named EA Sports PGA Tour. We were wrong.
EA Sports released a trailer today for their next generation of golf on next-gen consoles, and headlining it is golfer Rory McIlroy. McIlroy said in a statement, "I'm very proud and humbled to see my face and name on EA Sports Rory McIlroy PGA Tour. This is a great honor, and something I couldn't even dream of growing up playing the sport. I really hope people enjoy the game and I'm very glad I can be a part of it."
EA Sports Rory McIlroy PGA Tour will be the first EA Sports title built using the Frostbite engine. You can expect beautiful environments, and some of the most detailed courses in franchise history. There's also no load times between holes, as Frostbite renders the entire course at once. It's not all real courses though, as you can expect plenty of fantasy tracks as well.
Brent Nielsen said in a release, "Frostbite has allowed us to take this franchise to a whole new level. The new engine drastically improves all facets of the game, from core gameplay to opportunities for brand-new modes and features. We're looking forward to sharing a lot of great news with our fans throughout the rest of the spring." Seeing as how Tiger Woods has plummeted in world rankings, mostly due to not playing at all because of injuries, EA Sports needed the next biggest golf star. McIlroy is arguably golf's biggest celebrity not named Tiger.
Rory McIlroy PGA Tour releases in June 2015 on Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Check out the very pretty trailer for it below.
