Last week, it was discovered that 15 of EA's next titles, including the next Mass Effect, Dragon Age 3, and Battlefield 4, will be built on the Frostbite 3 engine. The problem with that is that EA's new engine isn't quite compatible with Nintendo's new(ish) console, meaning many Wii U owners are going to be missing out on some promising new titles — including plenty of future Star Wars games.
It's been explained (to some extent) that "not too promising results" with Frostbite 2 on the Wii U were the leading cause of EA's decision not to further explore the option of bringing Frostbite 3 to the Wii U. However, the launch of the official Frostbite 3 website has revealed that EA is working on bringing Frostbite to all major mobile platforms. Talk about a shot to the gut for Wii U owners.
Described as one of EA's "most exciting projects," Frostbite Go is a "mobile division empowering EA game developers with Frostbite’s proven excellent workflows and features to bring true Frostbite experiences to all major mobile platforms."
I think NeoGAF user DMPrince summed up the reaction quite perfectly: "So there's a chance now Wii U will get Frostbite."
Ah, yes. Let the Wii U jokes begin. EA's decision to bring a version of Frostbite to mobile devices rather than Wii U confirms the company is more concerned with installed user base. After all, the official branding of Frostbite reads:
Runtime in Frostbite supports a highly scalable model in order to appeal to the diverse array of platforms available on today’s market. Efficiency in both our runtime memory and runtime performance are both key factors to enabling code and data systems to deploy content to diverse targets from XBOX360 and PlayStation 4 to iOS and Android.
So why not the Wii U? Simply put: the Wii U doesn't have an audience. Which also explains the lack of third-party support. Sorry, but that's the facts.
