Remember in Evangelion when Rei is forced to throw the Lance of Longinus at the angel Arael to destroy it (great episode btw)? Well… in honor of Evangelion’s 20th anniversary, Hakuto has plans to launch the Spear of Longinus at the moon. This isn’t an anime, manga, or some sort of short – this stunt is real life Earthlings committing space travel to perform an action found in one of the most popular animes of all times.
Hakuto is Japan's first civilian team who plans to send an unmanned object to the moon. The team’s name (which I love) goes by “Project to Pierce the Moon With the Spear of Longinus.” Where they came up with that name, I’ll never know. As expected, this project ain’t cheap. Through a crowd-funding website, Hakuro looks to raise 100 million yen (roughly $1 million) to reach for the starts by April 5th.
They can’t actually send the real Lance of Longinus to the moon since, you know, fictitious and all – but you CAN send a miniature 240 millimeter spear to the moon instead. I’m not a science guy, but I’m pretty sure sending anything to the moon is pretty damn challenging. Apparently they plan on sending it aboard an American space craft. Shouldn’t they be busy building the Eva-Series… I hope not.
So yea, this is awesome. Love the Eva love. The events of Evangelion do occur in the year 2015, looks like we’ll be ready if Arael shows his face.
Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
