Electronic Arts is continuing their newfound love for the PC digital game distribution platform Steam by bringing Star Wars: The Old Republic onto it. The MMO can now be played via Steam and is free-to-play!
Star Wars: The Old Republic originally came out way back in 2011 and was for a long while seen as one of the most ambitious MMOs ever. Not only is it set in the huge Star Wars universe but it’s widely regarded as one of the most expensive games to ever been created, with estimates ranging from 150-200 million Dollars.
While Star Wars: The Old Republic didn’t manage to become the biggest MMO in the end, it’s still a widely-played title in the genre. That’s thanks to EA continuously supporting the MMO over almost a decade now with large expansions.
STAR WARS™: The Old Republic™ is the only massively multiplayer online game with a Free-to-Play option that puts you at the center of your own story-driven STAR WARS™ saga. Play as a Jedi, a Sith, a Bounty Hunter, or as one of many other iconic Star Wars roles and explore the galaxy far, far away over three thousand years before the classic films. With 5 narrative expansions, become the hero of your own STAR WARS adventure as you choose your path down the Light or Dark side of the Force™.
When it initially came out, the situation between EA and Steam wasn’t rosy. Electronic Arts was hard at work establishing Origin as the only place to play its games and thus Star Wars: The Old Republic didn’t make it to Steam at all.
Things have changed massively in the recent past, with EA bringing more and more of their older titles alongside new releases to Steam. Now, it’s the time for Star Wars: The Old Republic. Since it’s a free-to-play MMO, the barrier of entry is as low as it can get. There are various monthly subscription plans that give access to expansions and increased level caps. And for fans of the cult Knights of the Old Republic RPGs, it’s the best bet at experiencing a new one.
