Epic has unveiled the newest iteration of the hugely popular Unreal game engine. To showcase what the Unreal Engine 5 is capable of achieving, the company decided to show a mighty impressive real-time game demo that was running on an actual PlayStation 5. See the future of gaming yourself below!
The launch of next-gen consoles from Sony and Microsoft is inching closer by every day. With roughly half a year until the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X coming out, we start to learn and more importantly see what these two consoles are capable of.
Epic has now fittingly shown the newest Unreal Engine 5 and used the momentum of next-gen by showing what the PlayStation 5 can do with their game engine. Now, while the demo is incredibly impressive, Epic is not a game developer and the system is so new, it’s not even out yet! That means we will likely see actual PS5 games that look even better than the demo shown above! Add on to that, that the Xbox Series X is a bit more powerful than the PS5, and next-gen is poised to blow us away.
Numerous teams and technologies have come together to enable this leap in quality. To build large scenes with Nanite geometry technology, the team made heavy use of the Quixel Megascans library, which provides film-quality objects up to hundreds of millions of polygons. To support vastly larger and more detailed scenes than previous generations, PlayStation 5 provides a dramatic increase in storage bandwidth.
For now, we have to do with the video by Epic and drool at the insane levels of detail that are on display. From photorealistic environments with life-like textures and lighting to realistic animations, physics. Unreal Engine 5 is promising a great jump for gaming next-gen. Developers will get their hands on Epic’s new engine in early 2021.
