Escape From New York Is Getting a Remake

But is i t a remake or a reboot? And is it warranted?

(This article contains spoilers. If you do not wish to spoil plot points to the new Escape From New York remake, do not read further.)

As some people know, there's an Escape from New York remake in the works.  Remakes lately have been very hit or miss. With Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3 likely being canceled and the new Ghostbusters actually being a decent film, it's hard to tell whether a remake of the John Carpenter classic would do well or not.

Escape From New York Is Getting a Remake

Many details arose about the remake with exclusive details from TheWrap, Including the fact that Neal Cross, creator of the Crime Series Luther has written the script. The details were given by TheWrap making this movie seem more like a reboot than a remake, in the sense that so many details are too different to consider it a 1-to-1 recreation. These changes are detailed below:

  • Snake Plissken has a real name

Perhaps it's the 80's nostalgia speaking, but the aura of unknown surrounding Snake Plissken was part of his charm. We never knew his real name. However, in the remake, his name is Robert "Snake" Plissken.

  • The bad guy won't be the Duke of New York

He will instead be Thomas Newton, the rich kid heir to an agrochemical/biotech corporation. He seems to be a good guy but isn't.  This is where some real changes start and make it seem like a reboot instead of a remake. This is just really different. But is it a bad change?

  • Lee Van Cleef's character will now be played by a woman

This isn't a problem. We've seen that proven in the Ghostbusters film this year. His role is replaced with CIA Deputy Executive Director Roberta Hauk.

  • New York City isn't a max sec prison

What? Instead of being a prison, New York City is a strangely serene city controlled by an artificial intelligence to keep everything in order. This is the part I'm not so sure about… as a premise alone, it's pretty cool but as a remake of Escape From New York it deviates a bit too much.

  • The Remake doesn't start in New York City

Trivia time! The original Escape From New York had a deleted scene covering how Snake was captured and taken to New York. The new film will include a similar intro.

  • The film has the rest of the world in chaos

One in every 75 humans is displaced refugees from one thing or another and seeking asylum, giving the rest of the Escape From New York mythos some light.

  • There's a hurricane

Her name is Superstorm Ellery. We don't know much about it

  • The AI isn't as perfect as people had hoped

Is anyone surprised here? It's an action movie after all.

  • Snake has only eleven hours to complete his mission

The original gave him 22 hours. His mission in the new film is to bring Newton, the playboy millionaire alive.

  • Newton has a failsafe

This mysterious failsafe is called Fat Boy. As Fallout fans may know, a fat boy is a nickname for a nuclear device.

Escape From New York Is Getting a Remake

Overall, this movie could be good, or it could be terrible. Honestly, with the way remakes have been it's a complete toss-up. More information is definitely needed, but if you're on the fence about it, be sure to check back with GameZone after the movie releases to see what we think when it eventually releases!
