Evolve will not go free-to-play on Xbox One, PS4; Game development has ceased

Over the summer, Turtle Rock's asymmetrical shooter, Evolve, went free-to-play on PC. It was a move that took the dying game and brought it back to life. Unfortunately, the free-to-play version of the game won't be heading to consoles like it had been planned and won't be getting developer support on any platform from here on out.

Turtle Rock has announced that development on Evolve has come to an end.

"We were hungry for more but unfortunately today is the last day that Turtle Rock Studios can work on Evolve," Turtle Rock co-founders Chris Ashton and Phil Robb wrote (via Eurogamer).

"It’s always hard to leave one of our games behind. Left4Dead was no different and now it’s Evolve’s turn. There will always be a special place in our hearts for our past projects. No matter what happens with Evolve in the future, we’ll know it was born in this studio and developed by this team alongside this beautiful community."

Ashton and Robb went on to detail that while the game went free-to-play on PC, via Stage 2, consoles will not be getting the free-to-play version of the game.

"There’s a lot that we really wish we could have done, especially taking Stage 2 to consoles, but it looks like that’s just not meant to be."

The co-founders thanked the community and promised that the team would be going on to new projects. Turtle Rock will be  holding a final livestream at 12PM PDT on October 27th to bid farewell to the game.

Maybe… Turtle Rock will bring us Left4Dead 3…?
