Ex-Nintendo indie specialist says Wii U name cut system sales in half

Dan Adelman left his position as Nintendo’s head of digital content only yesterday—going on record as planning to “go full-blown indie”—but has already begun discussing the goings on of the company. Among a recent Q&A session, Adelman echoed the sentiments of confused Wii owners everywhere: “the name Wii U is abysmal.”

“Wii U is not selling as well as it deserves to,” Adelman said in reply to a question regarding whether Nintendo deserves their poor sales. “It has a lot to offer with great games you can’t get anywhere else. The value of the GamePad hasn’t been justified. But the name Wii U is abysmal. I think that cut sales in half right there.”

As Destructoid reports, Adelman was under a social media silence order per Nintendo’s higher-ups, largely thanks to his habit of speaking out on the company’s philosophies. That he harbors content for the Wii U brand—by all rights a vague name easily misconstrued as an expansion to the original system—comes as no surprise.

Wii U continues to struggle financially, as even the success of Mario Kart 8 could not jumpstart the system. The system's strong 2015 lineup may, however, right the sinking ship.
