Excellent survival-shooter Hunt: Showdown headed to PS4 next month

Crytek’s brilliant competitive survival-horror shooter Hunt: Showdown is landing soon on the PlayStation 4. Publisher-developer Crytek released a statement about the PS4 version’s imminent launch on February 18th. The studio further teased continued and meaningful support including a PvE mode for solo play.

The German Wunderkind developer Crytek experienced a very rough past decade after pushing out one disappointing title after the other. Despite starting their history supremely well with the original Far Cry and topping it immediately with the spiritual successor Crysis, things looked wonderful for the studio. In hindsight, deciding to tune the brilliant Crysis gameplay to fit into console hardware and gameplay conventions turned out to be an unwise decision. The franchise is pretty much dead in the water these days.

But Crytek didn’t try to revive their premiere IP and instead jumped into the multiplayer train with moderate success at first with the F2P Warface. The experience made during this led to the studio’s most recent breakout hit Hunt: Showdown. As a self-published title, Hunt won over gamers on Steam during its Early Access period. It subsequently launched on the Xbox’ Game Preview program and fully released last year.

Looking beyond Update 1.2, Hunt: Showdown will see even bigger updates arriving, including cross-play between Xbox and PlayStation, a Solo PvE mode, live-events, outfit customization, and a new map.

The big good news today is that PlayStation 4 users can look forward to finally play Hunt: Showdown next month. As part of it, Crytek has teamed up with Koch Media who will handle the physical and digital release of the console versions.

In their blog post, Crytek also promised to continue supporting Hunt: Showdown going forward with new content, game modes and live events. The biggest takeaway here is the remark of a solo PvE mode in the future which will be very welcome for gamers who aren’t into multiplayer gaming. There’s no timeline on these updates.
