Fallout 4 was one of the most anticipated games of 2015. It had an awesome reveal 6 months prior to release and was going to be the long-awaited sequel to what is considered one of the best RPGs ever made. People could barely contain their excitement, it was an event among gamers. The game released in November of that year, it got fantastic reviews but fans felt it didn't innovate enough to really justify the wait between sequels. Regardless, people played the hell out of it and it made Bethesda a ton of dough and gave them a warm fuzzy feeling.
During an interview with Kinda Funny, Bethesda's Marketing Executive Pete Hines discussed the game's massive success. It was so successful, that it tops 2011's smash hit, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.
"Fallout 4 has gotta be the most successful game we’ve ever launched in our company’s history. More than Skyrim, in terms of what we did.”
That's a pretty impressive feat considering Skyrim sold 21 million copies from 2011 – 2014. Fallout 4 sold a whopping 12 million copies on release day alone, the game has more than likely grown since November 2015 with several DLCs releasing and of course, word of mouth encouraging players to buy the game.
Hines also discussed those complaints from players that we previously mentioned. He chalked it up to players having already experienced a game like Fallout before and Fallout 3 felt fresh and gave a unique feeling when they first played it.
“When you do another one, well it’s not the first one again, there’s gonna be some commonalities. Like, you can’t just react to VATS in Fallout 4 the way that you did in Fallout 3, because in Fallout 3 you saw it for the very first time. You’re like, ‘shit this is a really cool, interesting way to kind of bring targeting different body parts to a first-person shooter but in a way I understand’ […] Well how is that supposed to have the same impact in Fallout 4?"
Hines does assure players that they're going to try and do more for future projects, so hopefully, Elder Scrolls VI will be a big step up from Skyrim.
"Whether it’s Fallout or Elder Scrolls, or whatever it is they’re gonna do next, I think their mantra is always ‘we really gotta step up our game.'”
