Fallout 4 is shaped by Skyrim, inspired by GTA 5

Bethesda revealed Fallout 4 well-before E3 2015 (a week is a lot of time in this industry), their initial reveal included a game trailer and the knowledge the game was coming to the Xbox One, PS4 and PC. Today, we are happy to say that E3 shed a lot more light on the finer details of the game, like how it is shaped by feedback from Skyrim and inspired by the freedom found in Grand Theft Auto V.

Speaking with GameSpot, Bethesda's creative director Todd Howard spoke on previous Fallout games, the upcoming coming Fallout game and games in general. One of the biggest takeaways from the interview was where the game is founded and how important the world is.

"The feedback we're getting from Skyrim is helping inform Fallout 4, in terms of what worked and what didn't work," explained Howard before going on to further detail what they learned from Skyrim. "Things like the flow of the open world; the plusses and minuses of that. How do you tell a story? How do you add all these other things to make it open? Given that it's open-world, what kind of stories could you tell best?"

When it comes to the game that inspired them, Howard cited Grand Theft Auto V (GTA V) as one of the heavy-hitters for Bethesda. Rockstar gave players ultimate freedom and Bethesda is looking to emulate some of the aspects of GTA V's freedom.

"Well, in our games, we want to give you complete freedom. So, I think of the last few years, I think GTA V had succeeded the most at the same type of thing we try to do. I look at that game and think, "Wow, I just don't know how they did this."

That's what we try to create, that sense of going anywhere and doing anything. GTA V does it so well. It puts you in its world and it makes you its director. It says yes to the player a lot, and that's what we try to do. It's just a phenomenal game."

Howard went on to say that "The world itself is always the most important thing to us." Fallout 4 is set to release for the Xbox One, PS4 and PC (as optimized as possible) on November 10, 2015.
