River, the real-life German Shepherd upon which Fallout 4’s Dogmeat companion is based, was crowned Top Video Game Dog at the 2015 World Dog Awards.
Hosted by The CW and IAMS, the World Dog Awards saw fierce competition in the video game category. As previously reported, Chop from Grand Theft Auto 5, D-Dog from Metal Gear Solid 5 and the pack from Barbie and Her Sisters Puppy Rescue were also nominated, but in the end Dogmeat and real-world counterpart River took home the coveted golden fire hydrant.

River is owned by Bethesda Lead Level Designer Joel Burgess (pictured in tweet, left of River), who was there to support her as she planted her paws on the red carpet. Perhaps if Burgess had trained River not to attack Legendary Deathclaws on sight, Dogmeat wouldn’t have made a habit of it in-game.
