A self-taught 3D artist and Overwatch fan named Joshua Llorente has created a map that is inspired by real-life Cairo. It was so well made that it apparently caught the attention of Blizzard’s own Jeff Kaplan, director of Overwatch.
The map, made in Unreal Engine 4, look remarkably like something Blizzard would make. When Llorente originally posted the map to Reddit last week, Kaplan himself commented, saying, “Amazing work! We’ll be in touch.” Afterwards, Llorente shared an actual tour of the map as it would look in-game to a player. We think it would fight right in with the rotation of maps currently in the game. Check out the map walkthrough below:
The level is pretty complex, with more hallways and side paths than a typical Overwatch, but the look couldn’t be more spot on. It’s a payload map with a mix of futuristic skyscrapers and Egyptian pillars to fit the Cairo description.
It’s nice to see Blizzard and their fans interacting in this way, unlike the loot box controversy looming overhead lately. Blizzard, however, thinks Overwatch doesn’t belong in that controversy due to the way they handle loot boxes, making them far less of a gamble.
