Fans petition to put U.S. Women’s National Team on cover of FIFA 16

Why not put the newly crowned Women's World Cup champions on the cover?

For the fourth straight year, Lionel Messi will grace of the cover of EA Sports' FIFA game; however, if a new petition garners enough attention there may be a chance we could see a different cover — one that features the United States Women's National Team, winners of the 2015 Women's World Cup.

In light of the U.S. Women's National Team's latest accomplishment, a new petition has been created to get them on the cover of FIFA 16. And ya know what? It makes sense — not just because they are champions, but because this is the first year Women's National Teams are featured in the FIFA video game. Why not celebrate such a feat by putting the World Champs on the cover?

Of course, putting the U.S. Women's National Team could have other benefits as well. According to Rob George, the man who started the petition:

"Putting the USWNT on the cover of FIFA 16 will do much more than honor a dominant World Cup champion. It is important because of the message it will sent young women all across the world. It will show girls across the globe that it is possible to do anything they want to do. It will have such a positive impact on both soccer playing and non soccer playing girls.

This team has meant so much to a lot of young women in the past few years. Why not send a message that would inspire a sense of confidence and self worth to women everywhere."

I get that the world may not share the same view or ideology as Rob George from Norfolk, Virginia, but at least in America we should take notice of and honor the Women's Team's amazing accomplishment. I'm not sure how much leeway EA has at this point in changing the cover, but it sure would be great if they could do something to somehow honor the U.S. Women's National Team, even if it's a reversable cover or something.

At this point, the petition only has 300 supporters, but you can sign it here.
