Far Cry 2 initially had me intrigued. It wasn't until I finally got the game that I realized it ended up being more tedious than actually fun. One thing the devs want to change about Far Cry 3 is to make it much more fun, less tedious, so it doesn't feel like a chore.
One huge aspect of Far Cry 2 was traversing the giant map. However it wasn't as easy as getting from point A to point B. Your car could break down, you had to fix its engine, you would get stuck on various flora, and in the end you'd spend more time walking than driving.
Lead Game Designer for Far Cry 3, Jamie Keen stated:
“What we wanted to do with this one is we wanted to make driving a fun experience. We wanted it to feel like you can pull a handbrake turn round a corner and when you do it it is great and fun to do. You can just launch your vehicle at 70mph off a cliff – it might not do very well – but you can do that stuff.”
However for those that prefer instant satisfaction over a scenic route, there is a fast travel component built into the game which will allow players to instantly travel to key locations.
“We have fast travel points that let you move quickly around the world. You never feel like anything is too far way but it’s there and its the choice that you are making, This idea of player choice is very important to us, that you are the one that’s deciding the pace and what you engage with.”
Now if only Gearbox would learn to make fast travel a little more approachable and convenient on the planet of Pandora.
