‘Father of PlayStation’ to receive Lifetime Achievement Award at GDC

Ken Kutaragi, the CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, is more affectionately known as the father of the PlayStation — and he's winning a lifetime achievement honor at the GDC Awards on March 19 for his achievements.

Kutaragi started as an engineer — he actually developed the sound chip in the Super Nintendo — and rose up in Sony's ranks. He played an instrumental role in the development of the first PlayStation console, which sold over 100 million units.

He was also heavily involved in development of its successor, the PlayStation 2, which was nearly twice as successful, though he wasn't as lucky with the PlayStation 3.

Mark Cerny, the architect of the PlayStation 4, will present Kutaragi with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
