Fear The Walking Dead premiere date announced with chaotic debut trailer

AMC's The Walking Dead spinoff show set to debut on August 23

Following today's panel for The Walking Dead at San Diego Comic-Con, AMC immediately followed with another panel for the show's spinoff, Fear the Walking Dead.

A new trailer offering a first real look at the highly anticipated show was shown today, alongside an announcement that the first episode will premiere on August 23.

As you'll see from the three minute trailer, Fear the Walking Dead has a much different tone than Robert Kirkman's original comic series The Walking Dead. That's partly because this spinoff series will show the initial stages of the outbreak. While we are quite familiar with what's happening in Los Angeles, the characters in the show have no idea what's going on. And because of that, Fear the Walking Dead will focus on a much different question:

"What did the world look like as it was transforming into the horrifying apocalypse depicted in The Walking Dead? This summer, AMC will answer that question with Fear The Walking Dead, an all-new original series set in Los Angeles, following new characters as they face the beginning of the end of the world."

Kirkman has already stated that we won't get an actual answer as to what caused the outbreak, but at least we can see how it spread, which I think is pretty cool. It'll also be neat to be introduced to brand new characters that don't already have a backstory from Kirkman's comic.

I know this is only a trailer, but it gives off a 28 Days Later sort of vibe. The zombies may not be as fast, but the choas and uncertainty surrounding the outbreak is certainly there. All in all, it's a pretty good first impression, though I wonder — as a Kirkman spinoff — if the show will still have as big of an emphasis on character development and relationship as The Walking Dead.

For those still invested in The Walking Dead, today we saw a brand new trailer for Season 6, which you can watch here.
