Independent studio Free Reign Entertainment today announced Shattered Skies, a sci-fi MMO with a penchant for survival and a powerful hate for aliens.
Free Reign described Shattered Skies as a “survival looter shooter” in a press release, noting the game’s focus on horror, which likely stems from Free Reign’s previous project, Romero’s Aftermath. Still, the game’s alien enemies, many of which bear a striking resemblance to Dead Space’s Necromorphs, are a new element.
The game is essentially a sandbox, and it seems looting will stitch together such disparate elements as building fortification, RPG-lite equipment customization and first- or third-person shooting. True to its survival pedigree, Shattered Skies will also feature a “harsh item drop rule” that punishes death, which dovetails nicely with its focus on PvP interactions.
"Thanks to our experience making open world titles, we've added into Shattered Skies an industry-leading anticheat system and made it easier than ever to play with friends, as well as experience end game content for high level characters," said Senior Gamer Designer Adam Skidmore.
Shattered Skies will enter a closed alpha test by the end of March. Free Reign said the full game will be eventually be available for "a single, one-time purchase without microtransactions, season passes or paid expansion, with all content to be unlocked solely by playing the game and depending on your skills.”
