The long-awaited, oft-overhauled Final Fantasy 15 will release sometime within 2016, Director Hajime Tabata confirmed to Eurogamer.
“You won’t be waiting until 2017,” Tabata said. “We want to get that across. We want to assure people that we are going to get it out.”
Tabata’s update comes on the heels of a new trailer shown at Gamescom, which didn’t quite light the crowd on fire. Heavy on CGI and light on gameplay, the trailer failed to answer many of the questions burning holes in fan pockets, leaving many feeling empty-handed.
“We miscalculated the kind of expectations toward this event, especially for what people want to see at this show,” Tabata said. “There was a big gap between our perceptions of what people should be doing and what people expected.”
Regardless, Final Fantasy 15 is making good progress, and has been since Tabata took over as director in 2014, he said. As such, the game will have no problem releasing in the next calendar year. If we’re going to get a firm release date anytime soon, it will be at PAX Prime later this month.
