An upgraded version of the classic role-playing game Final Fantasy 5 hit the New Zealand App Store today, which means it's likely to release in North America tonight.
The localization is a surprise as publisher Square Enix had only announced the title for Japan this month. Veteran designer Kazuko Shibuya has remade the graphics and characters for the mobile version. The game also includes the bonus dungeon the Sealed Temple from the 2006 Game Boy Advance release, along with the optional boss Enuo.
The American version should cost around $16. Square Enix is leaning heavily on rereleases (like the recently confirmed HD versions of Final Fantasy 10 and 10-2 for PlayStation 3 and PS Vita), but the company has run into trouble financially. Yoichi Wada has just stepped down as president due to "slow sales of major console game titles in North American and European markets" and "sluggish performance" in the arcade market.
