Ahead of its official August 20, 2015 release date, Final Fantasy 7 is now available via the App Store in select regions.
As Eurogamer reports, the game is now live on the New Zealand storefront but has not yet to come the UK, let alone the EU or US. Still, the game’s specifications are up for grabs. Although only 2GB of memory is necessary for the application itself, the download requires at least 4GB of free space. iOS 8.0 or later is also required.
Although earlier models can run the app, Square Enix advises an iPhone 5s, third-gen iPad, or iPad mini 2 or newer for Final Fantasy 7 mobile. Older hardware will result in “exceptionally slow running speeds” bordering on and frequently dipping into unplayability.
The iOS edition of the game incorporates a split control system, letting players choose between a digital D-pad and virtual analogue. In an added effort to keep the action front and center, UI opacity will be adjustable.
Square Enix insists that, unlike the upcoming remake, the mobile port of the PC version does not change any part of the story or mechanics. However, the option to disable enemy encounters has been added, along with a “Max Stats command to become all-powerful in the blink of an eye.” Notably, turning off encounters will not skip event battles.
