Final Fantasy 7 Remake to have action based combat, not command based, clarifies director

We have been by on scraps when it comes to Final Fantasy 7 Remake. We know that the game will feature 'change,' but that no matter how much it changes the 'essence' of the universe will not. The game's development has been detailed as "progressing," but beyond these two things we haven't heard much.

Recently, Final Fantasy VII Remake director Tetsuya Nomura sat down for an interview in this week’s issue of Dengeki PlayStation, a Japanese based magazine. According to Nomura, the interview was meant to clear some details up on the game's battle system.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake's combat system is based on an action system, not a command system.

During MAGIC 2017 last month, a screenshot of Final Fantasy 7 revealed Cloud crouched behind a box (above), taking cover from an oncoming attack. The image may have been misinterpreted, however, Nomura has detailed the image was intended to show that there are certain areas on the map where Cloud can interact seamlessly and that taking cover is entirely optional.

Another image (above), showed off Cloud taking on a Guard Scorpion. Nomura detailed that this scene was meant to show off that the map will feature parts that are destructible and that the battle will be "flashy." The Guard Scorpion will feature a number of new attacks and looking closely reveals a bunch of missiles being launched up.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake will release in an undisclosed amount of parts (though Square Enix knows how many), with each part/episode being the size of Final Fantasy 13. The game mechanics have been going through "trial and error" and it has been confirmed that Cloud will still be able to cross-dress.
