Beyond the fact that the Final Fantasy 7 Remake is "progressing" we haven't heard much beyond that. We have seen a few images surface here and there, but details are sparse. From what we know, Square Enix used 2016 as a "year of preparations," which suggests that development should be in full swing now.
As for the game itself, it will release in an undisclosed amount of parts (though Square Enix knows how many), with each part/episode being the size of Final Fantasy 13. The game mechanics have been going through "trial and error" and it has been confirmed that Cloud will still be able to cross-dress.
Any details on the game are appreciated at this point, so when game director Tetsuya Nomura sits down for an interview – even if it's one question – everyone listens. Recently, Nomura has detailed that there will be plenty of change in the game, but the spirit of Final Fantasy 7 will remain.
"A lot of things will change, but the essence of the universe will not. That is one of the things that will remain intact," Nomura said to RPGFan.
We don't know when Final Fantasy 7 Remake will release, but at least we know this.
