Final Fantasy 7 Remake Producer comments on development, still no release date in sight

As we come upon the third year mark of the magical Sony E3 2015 press conference, two of its most prominent titles have stayed mostly quiet since then. The most significant name to do so is the Final Fantasy 7 Remake, which was long rumored and yearned for by fans everywhere since the early days of the PS3.

Updates on the game’s progress have been scarce at best, so when something, no matter how small comes out about it, it tends to draw more than a little attention. In an interview with the Japanese magazine, Famitsu Weekly (via DualShockers), producer Yoshinori Kitase gave a tiny and generic update on how the game was progressing.

He said that development was going smoothly and that one of his goals for 2018 was to work on “comfort.” He hoped that on a personal level that he’d be able to take it easy, but given the rigors of game development and the pressure that comes along with a brand such as Final Fantasy, it does seem like he is at least in some sense, kidding.

It wasn’t that long ago that the Final Fantasy 7 Remake “urgently” needed additional staff and moved the development pipeline to be entirely internal. Three years of mostly silence usually translates to either development issues or too early of a reveal (and sometimes an unfortunate combination of the two), and given the drawn-out development that Final Fantasy XV underwent while it was Versus XIII, it’s hard to imagine Square Enix wanting to repeat that cycle.

Also in the same interview, Brand Manager Shinji Hashimoto mentioned that he was looking forward to E3 2018, saying that he hoped to generate more excitement around the games that are being developed by Square Enix. It’s worth noting, however, that he did not mention the Final Fantasy 7 Remake by name, so it’s probably safer to wait and see then to expect it to be there.
