Final Fantasy XV Director: ‘we don’t currently have any plans’ for a trilogy

We should probably see if the characters are worth our time before seeing them for two more games

One thing at a time. That's the way Final Fantasy XV Director Hajime Tabata sees it, and a good thing too. Final Fantasy XV has been in production for over a decade, and suffice it to say, Square Enix has invested a lot of money into the project. So before they even consider investing more, it might be wise to see how the world receives this game.

In an interview with Gamespot, Tabata confirms that neither he nor the company have any plans to give Noctis a trilogy in the same way Square Enix did with Lightning and Final Fantasy XIII. He said:

"To answer the question of whether we have any intention of making further games with Noctis in them after or continuing the story after Final Fantasy XV is out, I can tell you we don't currently have any plans for that.

There may be a call for it business-wise, but personally, from our point of view, the way we see it is there are people that have been waiting for this game for a very long time now, and we want them to keep enjoying it for as long as possible."
However, that's not to say that the incredible amount of work that he and the team have done to get the project turned around will be all for naught. Tabata does see how the game's framework could be used on future projects. He said:
"In terms of what we want to do with the technology, we want to use that technological foundation that we've built up with Final Fantasy XV and move on to do something completely new using that knowhow and that base. We're going to look into new directions with it."
This may not necessarily be an indication of a future Final Fantasy, but it does seem to hint at a push towards more open world games being developed by the studio. Final Fantasy XV will be the first open world game in the franchise, which should prove to be quite a relief to those (like me) that couldn't shake the disappointing sense of claustrophobia from Final Fantasy XIII.

Final Fantasy XV was recently delayed after its release date was previously revealed to be September 30th at the Final Fantasy XV: Uncovered event back in March. This caused quite the uproar among fans across the internet, resulting in the usual vulgarities and backlash before it was confirmed by Square Enix, causing many of said fans to suddenly disappear. Funny.

Final Fantasy XV will release on Xbox One and PS4 on November 29th, 2016.
