It feels like beating a dead horse when it's said that Square Enix has a lot riding on Final Fantasy XV, but the fact of the matter is they do. It's been ten years, and a lot of money has been spent on this project, so it seems that Square Enix is looking to get their profit margins as close to even as humanly possible. DLC is one way to do that, and it sounds like despite the fact that the game already has a Season Pass with 6 planned pieces of DLC, that there might be more in the pipeline. On top of that, it won't be covered by the Season Pass.
Final Fantasy XV Director, Hajime Tabata spoke to Famitsu and revealed that the studio has plans for additional DLC in the future. When asked about it, he said:
"That [the 6 DLC's] won’t be all. The ones that we’ve announced are the ones were decided that we’ll certainly do."
When asked if players would have to make an another purchase for the new DLC, he said:
"Yes. Should we decide on DLC that isn’t included in the Season Pass that is currently selling, then that’s how it’ll be. Although there are still many parts that are uncertain."
Tabata's wording is interesting here. He says "should we decide", so that to me says that Square Enix isn't 100% committed to going through with this plan and are possibly waiting on the game's critical reception to see if Final Fantasy XV is worth further investing in or if they will simply cut their losses.
Final Fantasy XV releases on November 29th, 2016 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
