Final Fantasy XV team’s next project is being built for the next console generation

Final Fantasy XV may still be one of Square Enix's primary focal points, but as game development goes, what comes next inevitably becomes the most important question. Game Director Hajime Tabata previously said that the team's next project would start next year, though what exactly it is, he didn't say. While that is still the case, Tabata told DualShockers at PAX West that the project is aimed at the next generation of consoles.

The Windows PC Edition of Final Fantasy XV is currently seen as the studio's largest technical achievement, but internally Tabata says that the development team's focus is "set to the future where they can go even higher."

To be more specific, he says that the Windows 10 version of Final Fantasy XV is about the halfway point in what the team hopes to achieve with their next project, though whether it will actually be another Final Fantasy game hasn't been confirmed at this time. 

Currently, the Windows 10 version can run at 4K/60 FPS, and the idea of anything being able to push past 4K, let alone a game, still feels pretty far out of reach right now. There's also no way for the team to know exactly what the next generation of consoles will look like, or if generations are a thing of the past entirely, so we probably won't be hearing concrete details on Tabata's next project for some time.

Final Fantasy XV is available now for PS4 and Xbox One.
